Bush-Cheney: the final days UPDATE Time’s links

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Time magazine’s account of the tensions inside the White House over the Scooter Libby pardon that never was is a must-read.

The online version, though, lets itself down badly by dropping in stupidly provocative cross-references throughout the text. So we get links to “See America’s worst Vice Presidents”, “See Bush’s economic mistakes” and my personal favourite “See pictures of polarizing politicians on Life.com”.

UPDATE Brent Baker at Newsbusters agrees about the links.

Biden teases ‘Teleprompter’ Obama

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

We always said Joe Biden was made of the right stuff even if his campaign status as the anti-Palin, a safe and experienced pair of hands, looks increasingly ridiculous.

And here’s what the Teleprompter blogger – still going, still funny and still largely ignored by the MSM – makes of it.

Cheney ahead on points says Bob Schieffer UPDATE Click to restore video

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

Credit where it’s due. We teased Bob Schieffer for holding his nose when interviewing Cheney on Face the Nation two weeks ago but he gives a fair summary of the Obama-Cheney spat here.

Schieffer has Colin Powell on Face the Nation tomorrow.

Who are these ‘Many Republicans’ exactly?

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

‘Many Republicans’ wish Dick Cheney would shut up, according to Dan Balz in the Washington Post today.

And to prove it, he goes on to quote . . . well, none of them. Just a couple of anonymous ’strategists’ who must be afraid Cheney will waterboard them if they give their names or something.

There’s plenty of balance in the article: Mary Matalin defends her old boss and Liz Cheney says her father, far from making Republicans ‘wince’, is receiving messages of support all over the place.

But as Newsbusters points out, that’s not what the headline says.

Cheney on Face the Nation

Monday, May 11th, 2009

We knew Dick Cheney wouldn’t be able to resist winding up snooty Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation yesterday.

Watch out for Schieffer’s ‘Are you serious?’ reaction when the former VP tells Colin Powell where to get off.

TV date: Fox News Sunday, 7pm

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

We don’t have to wait until 11pm this week for the Fox News Channel repeat of the Sunday morning show. It’s on at 7pm our time as well.

Who’s on? Gingrich and Petraeus. Politico has all the Sunday morning line-ups.

Cheney is on Face the Nation. Will Bob Schieffer even bother to hide his disdain? The podcast should be available late Sunday evening.

Banana republic

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The Wall Street Journal isn’t impressed by the prospect of the administration putting its political opponents on trial.

Until now, the U.S. political system has avoided the spectacle of a new Administration prosecuting its predecessor for policy disagreements. This is what happens in Argentina, Malaysia or Peru, countries where the law is treated merely as an extension of political power.

It also wonders where the U-turn on prosecutions came from.

As recently as Sunday, Rahm Emanuel said no prosecutions were contemplated and now is not a time for “anger and retribution.” Two days later the President disavowed his own chief of staff. Yet nothing had changed…

We pointed out one thing that had changed: Cheney’s interview.

McCain’s ‘official campaign blogger’ spills the beans

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

His name is Michael Goldfarb and he doesn’t say anything especially damaging, just leaves you with a cynical feeling about his decision to work for a campaign he always thought would lose with a brief he regarded as dumb.

There’s a whiff of Joe McGinniss’s The Selling of the President about it.

On Palin: he thought she made mistakes but was still the best option for the ticket. He rightly says that Romney or Lieberman would have brought their own negatives, and that when liberal papers like the New York Times report on Republican campaigns they’re reporting on things they have no instinctive understanding of and their coverage reflects that.

Biden told with a straight face: Be an elder statesman of few words

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Colbert King in the Washington Post ends inauguration week like a bear with a sore head.

Quite what Bill Clinton’s done to deserve his telling off is beyond me but King’s only getting warmed up. Who on earth would waste their breath giving this advice to Joe Biden?

No more smart-alecky stuff like the gratuitous public poke at Chief Justice John Roberts because of the flubbed presidential oath. Be the elder statesman of few words.

Here’s the video of the Roberts incident. Obama is NOT amused . . .
